10 Foods Toxic for Your Dog

We all know how hard it is to resist those longing eyes looking up from the floor. They convince you that just one nibble from your plate is harmless and will forever solidify your bond.

Ever since I was a child I have known that chocolate is dangerous for the dogs and can be lethal. It wasn't until much later in life I discovered there are a variety of things that we eat regularly that are toxic to our beloved four-legged friends.

Here are 10 other foods known to be toxic to dogs

Onions, Garlic & Chives
Cause intestinal distress and even red blood cell damage
Grapes and raisins
While we don't know the exact cause, these sweet treats can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure.
Macadamia nuts
Watch out for this toxic nut that can affect your dog's nervous system and muscles
Hold the guacamole -- avocado plants contain Persin. Poisonous to dogs, it will leave your favorite friend suffering from vomiting and diarrhea.
This artificial sweetener is often found in gum, mints and some peanut butter. This sugar substitute is especially toxic to dogs and can cause hypoglycemia.
Cooked bones
Dogs are meant to chew on bones, right? Some bones, especially cooked, will splinter and can perforate your dogs intestine.
Corn on the cob
If you think digesting corn is difficult, stay away from the cob! Ingesting it can lead to intestinal blockage and an unwanted trip to the emergency vet.
Let's see some ID, Fido -- dog years don't count. Alcohol is dangerous for dogs, causing damage to their central nervous system.
Can I get that puppuccino with oat milk, please? Dogs do not produce a great deal of lactase, needed to digest proteins found in milk. Consuming dairy can cause intestinal upset and diarrhea.
Moldy food
These unwelcome friends contain toxins that can make your dog very ill. It is best to dispose of all food that's gone bad.

What to do if any of these go missing from the counter or get gobbled up off the floor before you can pick it up? Call your vet right away.
